Why Labels Belong In Meal Prep

Labels reduce waste because you can use older portions first. They also stop risky guesswork around what a portion is, when it was cooked and whether it contains something important like nuts, dairy or spice.

They are most useful for chilli, curry, soup, bolognese, cooked mince, sauces, smoothie packs and anything frozen flat in bags.

What To Write On A Freezer Label

Write the meal name, date cooked, portion size and any reheating note. If a meal is for someone else, note the allergens as well as anything like spicy or very salty.

One caveat on that. Shorthand like "contains nuts" is fine for ordinary household organisation, but it is not enough for anyone with a diagnosed food allergy. Keep the actual ingredient list for those meals rather than relying on a label, and remember that cross-contact during preparation — shared boards, utensils, pans and oil — is not something a sticker can record. The Food Standards Agency publishes guidance on the 14 major allergens and on avoiding cross-contamination at home.

Use a marker that stays readable when cold and damp. A label that smudges after one day in the freezer is worse than no label because it creates false confidence.

Labels vs Masking Tape

Masking tape works in a pinch, but dedicated labels are easier to write on and neater when you use them every week. Removable labels are especially useful on glass containers and reusable silicone freezer bags.

If you already have printable meal prep stickers on the site, use those for planning and routine prompts, then use freezer labels for the actual date-and-contents job.

Buy labels if you freeze more than a couple of portions at a time. They are cheap, low effort and make every container or freezer bag more useful.
