Meal Prep Equipment UK: What Earns Its Place

Almost nothing on this page is necessary. Meal prep works with a knife, a board, an oven tray and some boxes, and the equipment industry would rather you did not know that. What follows is the short list of things that genuinely change how a week goes, in the order worth buying them, and an honest note on the ones that mostly sit in a cupboard.

Buy in This Order

Scales, then containers, then everything else - and there is a large gap between the second and the third. A scale and a set of boxes cover the whole job. Everything below that line is convenience, and convenience is worth paying for only where it removes a step you are actually skipping.

The useful test before any of it: what went wrong last week? If the answer is that you guessed portions, buy a scale. If it is that food went to waste in the freezer, buy labels before you buy a sealer. If nothing went wrong, buy nothing.

Kitchen Scales, and the Cooked-Versus-Raw Trap

A basic digital scale with a 3-5kg capacity and a tare button covers everything meal prep needs. The expensive ones weigh the same food. What matters is that it is on the worktop rather than in a drawer, because a scale you have to fetch is a scale you stop using.

The mistake almost everyone makes is weighing at the wrong point. Weigh raw, before cooking, unless a plan explicitly gives a cooked weight - rice and pasta roughly double to triple in weight as they absorb water, and meat loses a quarter or more of its weight as it cooks. Weighing 100g of cooked rice when the plan meant 100g dry is a difference of well over 200 calories, and it is the single most common reason a carefully followed plan does not work.

You also do not need to weigh everything. The calorie-dense items - oil, nuts, cheese, cereal, pasta, rice - carry most of the error. Vegetables barely move the total and are not worth the effort.

Blenders: Only if You Actually Drink Them

Single-serve bullet blenders suit meal prep better than jug blenders, for the unglamorous reason that you drink out of the cup you blended in and wash one part instead of four. A jug blender is the better machine and the worse habit.

The useful trick is freezer bags rather than pre-blended drinks: portion the fruit, oats, spinach and seeds into bags on Sunday, then tip one into the blender with milk or yoghurt in the morning. Blending a week ahead gives you separated, browning smoothies by Wednesday; blending fresh from a prepped bag takes ninety seconds and tastes like it should.

Vacuum Sealers: Real, but Narrower Than the Marketing

What a sealer genuinely does is remove air, which slows freezer burn and lets flat-packed portions stack and thaw quickly. For anyone buying meat in bulk or freezing large batches, that is a real saving over months.

For most people it is not. Bags are a recurring cost, the machine takes worktop space, and rigid containers with the air pressed out do most of the job for nothing. Buy one if you freeze in volume every week; skip it if the freezer holds a few portions at a time.

Some things should not go in one at all: soft fruit and bread crush, and raw mushrooms and soft cheeses are better left in air. Liquids need freezing solid before sealing or they get pulled into the machine.

Air Fryer Accessories and Shakers

Air fryer accessories are worth it only once you own the air fryer and know what it does badly. Size is the whole decision - a kit that does not fit your basket is scrap - so measure the basket before buying anything, including liners.

Silicone liners are the one most people should buy first, because they solve washing up rather than cooking. They do reduce crisping slightly, which is the trade: use them for anything saucy and cook straight on the basket for anything that needs to crisp.

A shaker is an inexpensive purchase that only matters if you take powder to a gym. If you do, buy two, because the smell problem is not about the bottle - it is about a protein shaker left in a bag overnight, and the fix is having a spare so one can be washed properly rather than rinsed.

Cookbooks, Which Are Not Equipment

A batch-cooking cookbook earns its place differently from a gadget: it changes what you cook rather than how, and that is usually the bigger problem. Most people stall because they are bored of four meals, not because their knife is slow.

Get more out of any of them by reading for method rather than recipes - which components freeze well, what reheats without going dry, which sauces carry a base through three different meals. That is the transferable part, and it outlasts the specific dishes.

What Not to Buy

Anything single-purpose that replaces thirty seconds of work: egg slicers, avocado tools, herb strippers, banana cases. Anything sold as a meal-prep-specific version of a normal object, which is usually the normal object at a markup.

And nothing at all until the basics are being used. A cupboard of equipment is the most common form of meal prep procrastination - it feels like progress and cooks nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment do I actually need to start meal prep?

A digital kitchen scale and enough matching containers for the meals you prep. That is genuinely the whole list. Everything else solves a problem you may not have yet.

Should I weigh food raw or cooked?

Raw, before cooking, unless the plan states a cooked weight. Rice and pasta roughly double to triple in weight as they absorb water and meat loses around a quarter, so the two are not interchangeable - this is the most common reason a followed plan does not add up.

Is a vacuum sealer worth it for meal prep?

Only if you freeze in volume every week. It genuinely slows freezer burn and makes portions stack flat, but bags are a recurring cost and a rigid container with the air pressed out covers most of the benefit for nothing.

Do silicone air fryer liners stop food crisping?

Slightly, yes. Use them for saucy or sticky food where washing up is the problem, and cook straight on the basket when you want a crisp finish.

What is the cheapest upgrade that makes the biggest difference?

A digital scale, followed by sharpening the knife you already own. Between them they cost very little and fix more than any gadget on this page.
